Palo santo and white sage: What are they and what are they used for?

PAU SANTO E SÁLVIA BRANCA: O QUE SÃO E PARA QUE FUNCIONAM? - MPL beauty

A question we receive almost daily is how to "cleanse negative energies?". Perhaps because we have Palo Santo and White Sage on the website, and we believe there is something mysterious and powerful in these "tools" of nature, used for centuries for centuries to cleanse bad energies or the evil eye.

In this post, we'll talk about the benefits of using rosewood and white sage consciously and effectively, bringing harmony to both body and mind.

Palo Santo: What is it used for and how does it work?

Palo Santo has been a best-seller in the store since the day it became available!

Its smoke and scent seem to help dissipate negativity and bring in a sense of well-being. It has been used for centuries by Amazonian civilizations to ward off bad energies. I use it for two reasons:

1 - Because I enjoy cleaning the house and energy is something I feel quite strongly. Especially when there are arguments, serious problems, or someone who's been here with a "bad vibe".

2 - Because I like the sweet and "clean" smell that fills the house after burning the blessed wood ! Unlike incense, Palo Santo burns slowly. This means you can use it many times without that intense smell. This one is more subtle and delicate.

Properties of Palo Santo

The scent emitted by Palo Santo is the essential oil it contains – the tree's "life force." Like all essential oils, rosewood contains dozens, if not hundreds, of chemical constituents that are studied for their unique healing and regenerative properties. When we inhale these components, the nervous system assimilates and reacts – sending signals to the parts of the body that need recovery.

Palo Santo essential oil has benefits that include relieving allergy symptoms, repelling mosquitoes, fighting free radicals, relieving stress and anxiety, promoting restful sleep, alleviating nausea, and even reducing pain and inflammation. That's why I feel so relaxed after using Palo Santo .

Start your own ritual.

The next time you want to cleanse the energies of your home or make it smell fresh:

  • Stop and think for a moment about what you want. Cleansing energies? Perhaps a particular corner of the house?
  • Take a Palo Santo (holy stick) and light it, always carefully. Use a match if possible, or a candle. There are some rules, and one of them is that you should use natural fire, so lighters and stoves shouldn't be your first choice.
  • The Palo Santo will start to catch fire and will quickly go out. Let this process happen on its own. When only smoke is coming out, the "work" begins. I like to start with myself. I pass the smoke from bottom to top, and a little all around. I even help with my other hand to pass the smoke over myself almost as if I were shaking crumbs off my body (for example, from the shoulder up the arm to the hand).
  • Then I move on to the house. I start at the front door and follow the path, entering each room and doing every corner of it. Pay special attention to the doors and windows. When I do it on the children, I do the same as I did on myself, but since they have less patience and think I'm a bit "strange," I just circle the holy stick over each of their heads once.

White Sage: What is it used for and how does it work?

White sage is one of the most commonly used natural herbs for smudging because its benefits are immense. It is believed to improve sleep quality, mood, and air quality, and to ward off negativity. The practice dates back to indigenous civilizations in South America.

How to use it?

Here, we use it at the start of each season or during more "intense" moments, both at work and at home. It's something we should do when changing seasons, or whenever you feel anxious, or that life isn't going as planned, or is a real mess.

  • Open the windows (or doors) of the space you want to "cleanse" so that the smoke carrying bad energies can escape. I like to open all the closet doors too. Oh, and everything should be tidy – it doesn't make much sense to cleanse a disorganized space, does it?!

  • Start at the "entrance" - this could be the front door to your house, or office, or if you're only cleaning one space, the entrance to it.

  • Keep a ceramic bowl nearby (so that if any sparks fall, nothing will be damaged).

  • Light the sage carefully - it shouldn't burn like a torch, but rather smolder gently, releasing smoke.

  • Start by cleaning yourself: hold the sage close to your heart and then move it around your body. It's very important to cleanse the top of your head, back, and soles of your feet.

  • Next, in the space, start from the entrance and move through all the spaces on your left until you go all the way around and reach the starting point - think clockwise, you want to cover all the spaces in your house always in a clockwise direction.

  • Pass the smoke through all areas, don't forget around windows and doors. Inside closets, above the heads of your children (or colleagues). Fill the spaces slowly with the smoke. It is very important that you always do all this with good intentions in mind - it doesn't work if you're not using your whole spirit in the ritual.

Do not extinguish the sage torch. According to ancient beliefs, it possesses a "spirit" and knows when to extinguish it in order to properly cleanse a room. If the sage torch goes out, do not relight it in that room again. You don't need to walk around your house with the sage torch in your hand; place it in a burner suitable for this purpose and let it burn on its own. It's natural to notice that, from time to time, the smoke moves to a particular corner of the room – that's where you need to do a deeper cleansing...

So NEVER erase it with water, because then you can't use it again.

These rituals bring us a unique sense of peace . It's a moment when we dedicate ourselves to ourselves and our favorite spaces, in absolute silence . When I do this at the end of the day, I love to have a Detox or a Calming drink , because I feel they help me rest better and maintain the serene state that the ritual brings me. I hope you try it and feel as good as I do!

We hope you enjoy it! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask! You can now leave comments on this post 🤍
