Conventional toothpaste: if we can't swallow it, can we trust it?

Pasta de dentes convencional: se não podemos engolir, podemos confiar? - MPL beauty

It is through the mouth that so much begins in our bodies, from the food we eat to the water we drink, the air we breathe, the way we communicate, and yet, are we paying due attention? We often seem to forget that our gums and teeth are living, highly absorbent tissues, directly connected to our blood vessels, and therefore to our entire body.

To a greater or lesser degree, we are all conscious and careful about what we eat and the substances to which we expose our bodies. So why do we constantly neglect our mouths, if they are the most obvious gateway to every cell in our body? As children, we learn to brush our teeth twice a day, but we seem to skip the part about ingestion warnings. But what is so bad about conventional toothpastes? And how can we avoid this?

Healthy mouths, even

Basically, it's this: if we can't swallow it, how can we trust it? It's absurd to think we can have healthy mouths and teeth at the expense of chemicals and toxic ingredients. But unfortunately, that's what happens. Conventional toothpastes and mouthwashes contain various chemicals that can pose a health risk and interfere with the natural oral microbiome (an ecosystem of microorganisms that inhabit the oral cavity and support the maintenance of health), causing an imbalance. 🏽

Because they are full of synthetic ingredients, most toothpastes and mouthwashes are light-years away from what we consider appropriate for cleaning the delicate tissues of the body or protecting oral health. Can anyone imagine using an industrial detergent to take a bath? Of course not. But conventional toothpastes are the equivalent in the world of oral hygiene.

Even though they may be refreshing and full of foam, toothpastes with synthetic ingredients are much more harmful than they seem. And brushing your teeth repeatedly with this type of product can even be detrimental to your health, since the... The chemical (and toxic) substances they contain are rapidly absorbed by the oral mucosa, circulating throughout the body and impacting epilepsy cells, hormonal health, and the digestive system.

In the mouth, the absorption level is very high, so we have to pay even more attention. Fortunately, we don't swallow toothpaste by the spoonful, but contact still happens, and that's why it's important to be aware of ingredients that can be harmful if ingested. Here are some examples of ingredients that we don't want circulating in our bodies, but that are present in conventional toothpastes. We share this not to create alarm, but to keep you informed and help you make the best decisions:

  1. Fluoride: many conventional toothpastes contain this substance known as the arch-enemy of cavities. However, several scientific studies question its effectiveness and highlight its toxicity. Fluoride accumulates in the body (notably in the pineal gland), damages the gums, disrupts collagen production, and reduces enzyme activity.

  2. Saccharin and other artificial sweeteners, which are added to toothpaste to improve taste, are actually chemicals that can cause digestive problems and abdominal pain.

  3. It is very common to find ingredients such as trisodium phosphate (used for many years in detergents until it was banned), ethanol, carbomer (a polymer, a byproduct of gasoline), detergents and surfactants, artificial colors and flavors, among many other substances, in conventional toothpastes. They may pose health risks.

Natural Oral Hygiene

In short: conventional toothpastes, with chemical and artificial ingredients, are great at creating the illusion of impeccably clean teeth and the freshest breath in the world. But that's not quite the case. The main work of removing plaque is done by the movements of the toothbrush. Natural ingredients, such as baking soda and botanical elements like (true) mint and cardamom, which we can safely swallow, are wonderful for cleaning enamel without damaging it, neutralizing the pH of the mouth, slowing down plaque formation, and benefiting digestion (which begins in the mouth) thanks to their antibacterial and antifungal properties.

our Cardamom toothpaste , formulated with 100% natural ingredients such as white clay (to remineralize teeth), salt (to balance the mouth's pH), and peppermint and cardamom essential oils (for a healthy microbiome, keeping breath fresh), is the most natural way to maintain healthy teeth and gums, without chemicals. Equally refreshing and safe, our bleaching elixir Cleanses toxins from your mouth, keeps teeth white, breath fresh, and gums healthy. With a fresh mint aroma, this mouthwash is ideal for "oil pulling" (learn all about it here ), an ancient Ayurvedic medicine practice that involves cleaning the mouth with oils. Another essential Ayurvedic product that can't be missing for a healthy and beautiful mouth is... tongue scraper Made of copper. It's simply the most natural and perfect way to start your oral hygiene every morning, removing bacteria that accumulate during sleep and literally waking up gastric enzymes for another day of digestive work.
