5 Ways to Treat Damaged Hair

5 maneiras de tratar cabelos danificados - MPL beauty

Beach days are here, and our hair deserves extra attention, because we may love the sun and swimming (and we do!), but we also know that we're going to expose our hair to more stress, whether it's because of UV rays, which damage keratin and accelerate collagen degradation, or because of salt, which can further dry out already dehydrated hair, or because we're going to wet and dry it more often.

Achieving your dream hair requires dedication, care, and patience, but it's possible! Because we can always prevent damage or restore the strength and beauty of our hair, here are our 5 tips for treating damaged hair, just in time for the summer season (and beyond!).

Lower the temperature.

Excessive heat (from hair dryers, straighteners, or other heat styling tools) is one of the worst enemies of hair. Whenever possible, let your hair air dry and only use the dryer at the end. Another trick to reduce drying time is to first wrap your hair in an absorbent towel to remove excess water, then let it air dry, and only then use the dryer. If you really can't do without a straightener, try using it at a lower temperature. You'll see that it works the same way, and your hair will thank you. And of course, whenever you subject your hair to high temperatures, protect it with our Hair Sunscreen , with nourishing natural oils and natural silicone (derived from bamboo) that create a protective barrier against the heat that leaves hair dry and brittle. Perfect to use before blow-drying and whenever you expose your hair to the sun, of course.

Nourish your hair

It's absolutely essential: a gentle and nourishing conditioner , with natural ingredients that don't damage the hair, will be your best friend when working on repairing damaged hair. When applied, the conditioner helps to fortify the hair cuticle with a protective layer, which gives strength and shine. When applying the conditioner, make sure you first twist your hair to remove excess water. This will allow the product to be better absorbed by your hair and ensure that the hair shaft receives all the nourishing benefits of the product. For even more intensive nourishment, try our super hair mask , with powerful natural oils and butters, to hydrate, strengthen and repair dry or brittle hair. Apply to dry hair and leave on.

Be kind (and let your hair down!)

Even though it may seem difficult, try to wear your hair down whenever possible. Tying it up in tight ponytails is one of the easiest ways to cause breakage. If you have to tie it up, try using softer elastics, or a type of hair clip that leaves your hair looser.

Be gentle when brushing your hair. When wet, hair is more vulnerable and fragile. At this time, use a wide-toothed comb to detangle it, starting at the ends and gently working your way up. The moon comb is perfect for this.

Did you know that hair has memory? That after being tied up for a while it tends to become more "tense," whenever you wear your hair tied up, after letting it down, massage it with a jade comb to gently stimulate the scalp, promoting the growth of new hair, but also helping the hair to "relax."

Trim the ends regularly.

Hair health begins at the scalp and ends at the ends. That's why it's so important to maintain and trim the ends regularly. Doing so will prevent split ends. Trim the ends every 4-6 weeks if you're maintaining a certain length or hairstyle, or every 8-12 weeks if you plan to let your hair grow.

Give it time!

It takes time for hair to grow (hair grows between 1cm and 1.5cm per month) and patience is needed to repair damaged hair. And you also need to be careful. There are countless products with "miraculous" promises that guarantee immediate results – try not to be fooled by them! Most of these products contain synthetic ingredients that will only create more damage to your hair in the long run, in addition to being terrible for the planet. These products may even have a momentary effect, for example, an unusual shine, but you will see that it doesn't last, precisely because it's artificial! So remember: it may take time for your hair to recover and regenerate, but if you take good care of it and choose the right products, you'll see it's worth it.
